Discussin on literary topics:
point of view/character.

As I read each part I got different views, for me I mostly connected at first with the Mother and Bridegroom. I connected with them, because they were the first characters I met and I liked them from the start. As the story went on I felt there pain and I thought that whatever was being said from them was reliable. The author created a link right away to the reader by learning about the Mother and the Bridegroom's past early in the story, it made me seem like I have known them for a long time. Because I created a connection to them from the start I really hated the Bride and Leonardo, because I knew that they were no good. I finished the book today and I hate the Bride!!
But just as when you read the parts of the actors in the play you start feeling connected to them too. So as the play went along, I did feel a bit of sadness as well as hate for the Bride. I did not rely on what she said, because she was a liar to me for getting married and then running away with Leonardo. The Bride is presented as a total slut who should have died in the end, because she should have not alive! In my opinion, Lorca from the beginning used sympathy for the Bridegroom's family to create anger later on for the Bride and her horrible decisions.

Comparison:
Compare how writers in your study have explored the themes of judgement and punishment or disguise and deceit or love and friendship and with what effect.

I am going to be focus on how writers explore judgement. First of all I will start with Oedipus and his judement with trying to find out the truth about his orginins and what his punishment was. So his judgement seemed to be stubborn, because he really wnated to find out and when he didn't really believe what he was being told by the prophet he decided to find out from others. which ruined him, because he found out all the truth. And that lead him to his punishment which was causing chaos, and it ruined his family too.

In The Wild Duck, Hjalmar's judgement to treat Hedvig like she was nothing lead to the sad ending. Hjalmar's punishment was Hedvig's death, because she was trying to change Hjalmar's instant reaction and trying to win back his love.

For Blood Wedding, well I am not done with the book, so I can't really give my view on it. I will do a post later for Blood Wedding.

Bride to Leonardo:
Dear Leonardo,
So far I am a bit creeped out that you have been outside my window late at night. I had to find out from my maid, I am a bit worried. I do not wish to get the police involve, or worst of all my future husband. I am assuming you have found out about my recent engagement, I hope you do not feel any sorrow. I know I do not, I have moved on from out engagement to a wealthy man. I know for you do know about my engagement now that I think about it, my cousin has told you. I hope not to see you at my wedding, it may sound cold, but we are over.

Dearest,
Bride

Comparison:
A dramatists often creates a gap between what the audience knows and what the characters know. With reference to at least two plays, discuss how and to what effect dramatists have used this technique.

Both Ibsen and Sophocles used this technique to create a bigger impact when a character finds out about the secret who is affected by it. For instance, both Hjalmar and Oedipus find out about a secret that has not been told to them and it ruins their perfect little world that they have. The people around them get affected by how they react to the truth, for instance Hedvig is rejected because Hjalmar knows that he isn't the real father. And in Oedipus, when Oedipus finds out that he killed his father, and that he has slept with his mother and that his mom tried killing him, he get really upset and Jocasta kills herslef and Oedipus stabs his eyes out so he wouldn't be able to see what he has done. In both plays the audience knows the secret and it creates a sympathetic feeling for the characters who have been effected by the reactions of others.

IOP #5

Night before my IOP and I am very nervous and totally ready to get it over with!! I am just finishing up my presentation and finishing up what I will be saying. I will practice what I will say because I do not want to be stubbling up in front of the class. I really hope I do well. I am super nervous. I have decided to look nice because maybe it will help me feel confident and brave! Yay IOP!

comparison:
readers are attracted to moments of intensity in a writer's work. By what means and with what effect have writers in your study offered heightened emotional moments designed to arrest the reader's attention?

Writers get two characters involved in a secret that reveals the past of a character. Like in Ibsen, when Hjalmar finds out that Gina had an affair with Mr. Werle. Hjalmar starts finding out other things about other chracters and it gets everyone involved in the play, which creates the climax of the play. In Oedipus, Sophocles reveals Jocasta's secret about how she wanted to get rid of her cursed baby and because of that revealed secret, it creates the climax and leads to the tragedy. The emotion caused by the intense moments are worried, well for me personally. Why? Because I was worried what will happen to Hedvig, she is an innocent character to me and I don't want anything to happen that will ruin her happiness.

poem about Hedvig's wild duck

Wild duck, wild duck

how you got hurt

wild duck

I take care of you

you're mine,

O wild duck

I keep you indoors,

fresh water, rabbits jumping around

you are not just an old duck

you are my wild duck.

Took three shots,

O poor wild duck

dive deep in the sea

for wild weeds and moss from the sea

Comparison:
"Visual action can be as important on the stage as speech." How far do you agree with this claim?

I agree with this claim 100 percent, because on both the Oedipus and The Wild Duck there has been a lot of visual explanation that helps the reader visualize how the scene looks like without having to see it. And I can understand why there would be a lot of visual action, because back in the day there wasn't lots of different sets like there is today and so if they only have one set they had to explain how the scene was suppose to look like. Like in Oedipus, Sophocles had to explain the Palace and in in The Wild Duck Ibsen has to explain all the different rooms the people are in.

IOP #3

Today I started working on my powerpoint for my presentation, and I prtetty much did my outline for how I will be presenting.

OUTLINE
I.George Orwell
II. 1984 summary
III. Animal Farm quick summary
IV. Totalitarianism
V. George Orwell's views
VI. Evidence of view in 1984
VII. Evidence of view in Animal Farm
VIII. Conclusion

This isn't exactly how I will be doing my speech, because I still may change in what order I present all points, but this pretty much covers my IOP presentation.
I am looking for more evidence from the text to support my IOP.
I present on Friday, very nervous!!!!!

Question #2

Why is is significant that Sophocles uses the Shepard to tell Oedipus the truth?

Question #1

Do you agree with Jocasta's choice on trying to kill Oedipus when he was a child? If so explain why.

IOP #2

Today I got the hard cover of Animal Farm and I will start looking for evidence that will support my IOP which is to show the similiarities of George Orwell's works with his political view. I also did some more research as well on Mr. Orwell and I did some reading as well.

IOP #1

So I started my journals today, roughly a week before my IOP. My topic for my IOP is comparing George Orwell's political views with works to show similarities. So pretty much 1984. I am a bit nervous of how well I will be able to compare both things, they both are relevant since authors write about what they know and feel. Today I did some research on Mr. Orwell's, at first I did not find what I thought would be useful. And as I was researching I found out his has written an essay called "Politics and the English Language".

George Orwell, was an English author and journalist. His work is marked by keen intelligence and wit, a profound awareness of social injustice, an intense, revolutionary opposition to totalitarianism, a passion for clarity in language and a belief in democratic socialism.
In "Politics and the English Language," George Orwell provides six rules for writers:
"Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print".
"Never use a long word where a short one will do".
"If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out".
"Never use the passive voice where you can use the active".
"Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent".
"Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous". These rules I feel like will help me out some way with my IOP, I don't know how yet, but I feel like it is a possibility. And I also think that Politics and the English Language essay will be useful as well. I will check out tomorrow at school and see if there is any copy of this essay, if not I know I can find it online. From my search so far, in both books the theme of totalitarianism. And from this I think I might be putting a lot of my effort on that idea of politics. I will continue my research tomorrow, and I will also check out the hard copy of Animal Farm, and then I will be finding evidence.

Discussion on literary topics: Theme and ideas
I finished reading Oedipus, and I wanted to explore the ideas that I got from the book. After I finished reading, I went back and I was looking at spots that I remembered that foreshadowed to the end result of the play. I noticed that this play in my opinion is trying to express the idea of not running away from your troubles, that people should deal with the problem and try to solve it, because running away from problems doesn't really solve anything. Finishing Oedipus helped me decide what I will track for the next books. Another idea that I got from Oedipus was more a observation rather than an idea, and it was how the characters really think that their future has beenset in stone. And that connect to the idea of problems, because if their problems have been set in stone they won't be able to escape and when they do "escape" the problems it just creates the problem.

Creative: Diary entry from Oedipus

Hello diary,
I cannot talk for long, but I have horribles news. I know too much about what is happening right now. I know who my father is and I know who my mother is, and the worst part is that I have slept with her. The prophet was right! I do not know how I feel. I feel disgustisted with myself and I feel betrayed because how did Jocasta not know that she is my mother! I do not know what to do!! I just want to kill my self or hurt some one. Diary you are all I have right now, I have to go. I must seem not seem stressed about this. Until later.

Sincerely,
Oedipus the King

How does the background information on Greek Theater and History inform your reading of Oedipus? Use specific examples to explore the connections between context and content.

The background that we have gotten in class has helped me notice more evidence about how the plays have been written for theatres, because in many occasions in the drama if someone were to enter the seen whoever is speaking always says it so people will notice.

"Please, my lords. Enter

Jocasta from the palace

Look, Jocasta's coming..." (706)

From this quote it shows how a new person entering the scene is announced without being announced. And I have noticed this from the background that we have learned about the Greek plays. Another thing I have also noticed from what I have learned about the Greek plays is that the chorus clear up the story an the chorus also seem to know what is going on and also a bit involved too.

I respect you, Jocasta,

much more that these men here...

Glancing at the CHORUS.

Creon's to blame, Creon schemes against me. (770-772)

From this passage it shows how actual characters interact with the chorus, and I feel like this can will be creating some foreshadowing and also will create more drama in the play.

I have also noticed that there has been some war reference, because in line 765-766 "You who set out beloved land- storm-tossed, shattered- straight on course." Seems to be referring to to the Peloponnesian War, because the Greeks had won and from the reading in class, the Greeks had a very good government which connects to the "straight on course" line.

Discussion on literary topics journal:

"Blind who now has eyes, beggar who now is rich," (517)

From tonights reading so far I have seen a motif of blindness. Today during english class, Mrs. Wecker was talking about the book and spoiled the end for us, but I also see foreshadowing as well. I believe the motif of blindness ties into the end and that is why Sophocles uses those techniques. From the foreshadowing I also see ironic as well, because Oedipus is trying to find the murderur and the Tiresias the prophet tells Oedipus that he is the murderer, and Oedipus does not believe the prophet. So I tense ironicness in the text so far.
Also, my quote I think foreshadows, because it is saying how however has eyes will be a beggar and the prophet was talking to Oedipus and Oedipus is rich and I am assuming his wealth will go away as the drama continues on as well.
So far I am liking the drama. I like the setting as well. I think that historical setting is really interesting because of the Greek Gods.
